At the end of 2021 the Health and Safety Executive reported that there were approximately 822,000 workers suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety (new or long-standing). In the recent years prior to the coronavirus pandemic, the rate had shown signs of increasing and again in 2020/21 the trend continued to be higher than the 2018/19 pre-coronavirus levels.
Effects of stress for Organisations:
The health of your business relies on the health of your employees. HSE statistics show that stress and musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of lost work days. Modern society encourages us to be active always and in all ways but without a balance and sustainable approach to work and life employees can experience burn out.
In 2019, 'burnout' was recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an ‘occupational phenomenon’. Mental Health UK reported that in March 2020 46% of UK workers felt ‘more prone to extreme levels of stress’ compared with a year previously.
Effects of stress for Employees:
There’s now a much broader understanding and application of holistic health and wellbeing approaches in many workplaces. Based on her 10+ years of experience working with patients of the NHS Sophie has formulated a holistic approach to aid your employees in managing stress in and out of the workplace.
Delivered in your work space for one hour, Sophie's sessions cover evidence based research, strategies and tools to empower employees to observe for signs and symptoms of stress and actively engage in the prevention and management of it.
This holistic and sustainable approach to employee wellbeing is delivered via online or face to face education, group discussions with practical mindfulness/ meditations and Yoga stretches included in each session.
Education can create opportunities for better health. Understanding the signs, symptoms and causes of stress facilitates better prevention of burn out and promotion of resilience in the work place.
Meditation and simple breathing exercises have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and tension in the body, lower stress hormone levels, and help sleep come more easily. Simple strategies can also be learnt to reduce emotional avoidance which can lead to an exacerbation of stress.
Stress affects our central nervous system which in turn affects our 24-hour sleep-wake cycle. Poor quality sleep is understood to lead to impaired memory, poorer mood regulation, which can, in turn, lead to more stress.
Techniques and tips to get into a healthy sleep routine can break this cycle.
Investing in employee wellbeing can lead to better employee engagement, reduced sickness and & absence and higher performance and productivity.
The wellbeing plan explored in this course is a great starting point.
The natural opposite of stress, is relaxation. Yoga promotes this through gentle stretching, breathing and mind calming exercises. A number of studies have shown that Yoga can help reduce stress and anxiety as it encourages a strengthening of the vagus nerve which plays a role in the bodies regulation and recovery from a stress response.
Explore seated & standing movements [with or without a chair], to reduce pain, tension and stiffness in all areas of the body. Practices are graded and adapted for all health conditions.
Drinking sufficient water and eating certain foods can reduce the negative psychological and physiological impacts of stress. This approach works by boosting the immune system and lowering blood pressure.
Employees suffering with stress can experience cycles of over-activity and under-activity also known as Boom and Bust, which particularly affects their work-life balance. Learning how to plan, pace and prioritise your work tasks and wider activities of daily living can promote time management and efficiency in the workplace whilst encouraging engagement in meaningful occupations outside of work.
It's reported that approximately a quarter of the UK's workforce experiences chronic and persistent pain.
Support your employees in understanding exactly what is chronic pain, the current science behind why it occurs, the pain cycle and how to treat and manage the wide ranging debilitating symptoms.
